the world is my idea

self-portrait of Wodeman, pencil on paper

Art, in myriad forms and ideas, has always been a part of my life.

Yet, for years, I spent most of my time creating, developing, and running businesses, providing for my family, studying, and discovering my passions. I've also been involved in numerous social and art projects, both local and international.

This was my art of living — experiencing life, observing and engaging with things, people, and places, and learning...identifying myself more in terms of what I'm thinking rather than what I'm doing or possessing.

The war in Ukraine, people suffering and enjoying life all around the world, along with the beauty and horror of life, achievements of civilizations, and threats to humanity, are the main drivers that — in addition to a pure desire to create and enjoy the creation process — catalyzed my transition to becoming an artist in the traditional sense of the word, meaning someone who creates artifacts of artwork and shares them with others.

Although I still believe one doesn't necessarily have to make art to be an artist in the existential sense, speaking to the world as an artist requires creating something tangible that fellow human beings can see, touch, hear, smell, or taste.

In making art, thinking, feeling, and doing blend together most holistically; each enriches the other, allowing me to experience deeply that, as Schopenhauer put it,  'the world is my idea'.

Check out some of my work, read about some of my projects,  reach out to share your story, and ask me anything about my world.

With hopes,

Wodeman
